It is the capital and largest city of Costa Rica. It is in the center of the country, in the midwest of the Central Valley, within the San José Canton. San José is the seat of the national government of Costa Rica, the focal point of political and economic activity, and the main transportation hub. Founded in 1736 by order of the Cabildo de León, the population of San José grew during the XVIII century through the use of colonial planning. Historically it has been a city of strategic importance, having been the capital of Costa Rica three times. More than a million people go through it every day. It is home to the National Museum of Costa Rica, the National Theater of Costa Rica, and the La Sabana Metropolitan Park.
San José is surrounded by three important cities that make up the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM), which are Alajuela (where the Juan Santamaria international airport and the wonderful Poas Volcano are located), Heredia and Cartago (which have the Irazú volcanoes and Turrialba, in addition to the beautiful Prusia forest).
Some of the activities that can be done in the GAM is the famous City Tour, visits to museums, visiting some restaurants with a viewpoint where you can see the city of the GAM, visits to the Poás volcano, Irazú and a walk through the Prusia forest trails, among other activities.
